Compression
 | Compression is a common technique used to shrink the size of files so they consume less disk space and internet bandwidth; both of which tend to be expensive. Before eSilo backs up your data through the internet, it is compressed utilizing eSilo's UltraZip technology. UltraZip dramatically reduces the size of your files, making eSilo very affordable because we |
charge based on compressed storage size. All data remains compressed until it is restored to the customer's site.
Ratios
The amount of compression seen on a group of files can vary from one extreme to another. It is possible to see
compression ratios as high as 90%, yet it is also possible to get very little or no compression at all.
This depends on the type of data being compressed. When compressing text files, Word documents, Excel or emails, the
compression ratio will be very high. When compressing binary files or files already compressed (.MP3, .ZIP, .JPG), the compression
ratio will be very low.
In the end, eSilo's UltraZip shows an overall compression ratio of 45%. This means if you have 50 GB of data
that you want to backup with eSilo, UltraZip will shrink that down to about 27.5 GB.
