Why Online Backup?
There is no mystery about whether an organization should backup their data,
although how that should be accomplished remains in dispute. One undisputed
fact is that vital data cannot remain onsite, thus requiring a means of
transport to a second location.
Here a few reasons why to use eSilo's online backup solution:
The goal is to cost-effectively, securely and reliably transport information offsite to protect businesses from data loss. Recent natural disasters have made people think twice about managing their backups locally. "The Gartner survey also showed that IT managers are becoming more comfortable with using managed storage services to copy data off-site. Over the past two years, Couture said, 30% to 40% of IT managers surveyed indicated that they would never use a third-party service provider. But in the most recent survey, that number had plummeted to 6%." Gartner Group Dec 5, 2005
Secure and Reliable Backups
eSilo's backup technology was designed with security as a priority. All
data sent to eSilo is encrypted prior to transfer, with a private customer
key, and is sent through an encrypted internet connection. We use
256-bit AES encryption for data and communications which is simply
unbreakable.
Not only is your information safe from prying eyes, eSilo uses the internet as the vehicle of transportation. This is far more reliable and efficient than other forms transport: such as plane or truck. No one can "steal" your data along the way, like one could if you shipped tapes. Moving at fiber optic speeds beneath land or sea, eSilo secures your data in redundant locations. Tape Vaulting
With businesses accumulating more and more data each year (In five
years ... 34x more storage capacity on the floor to manage: META Group, Inc
Feb 2005), solutions to manage it all are becoming scarce.
Tape-Based backup solutions can no longer be managed economically in house,
which has lead to an increase of shipping backup Tapes offsite for long
term storage.
The real question is, "why ship data on an unreliable media via unreliable channels, auto or plane, when disks and the internet can be used?" "The most secure and reliable way of transporting electronic information is through an encrypted digital channel, such as an encrypted internet connection." Andrew Chernow, eSilo's CTO
Many large organizations, such as CitiBank, Time Warner, Ameritrade, Wachovia, Bank of America and MCI have all suffered data loss in 2004 and 2005 due to transporting their information on tape drives via Air or Land. "City National Bank has become the second company in two months to report a loss of backup tapes in transit by Iron Mountain Inc."

"CitiFinancial plans to begin encrypting data and sending it to credit bureaus electronically after data tapes containing the personal information of 3.9 million customers were lost by UPS." InternetNews.com
June 6, 2005
"Ameritrade Inc. has advised 200,000 current and former customers that a computer backup tape containing their personal information has been lost." MSNBC
April 19, 2005
"An estimated 1.2 million federal workers may be at risk of identity theft as result of lost computer tapes maintained by Bank of America." Consumers Union
Feb 25, 2005
"Time Warner Inc. this week said it will "quickly" begin encrypting all data saved to backup tapes after 40 tapes with personal information on about 600,000 current and former employees were lost in transit to a storage facility." ComputerWorld.com

It quickly becomes clear that a good backup plan uses a secured internet connection as its means of data transport. Tapes were simply not designed for mass amounts of digital data and as such offer limited capabilities in regards to reliably securing them offsite. |
